MSI Crosshair 18 HX AI review: is the big screen worth it?

How well will it play your games?

The RTX 5070 is capable, but “Ultra” is not equally demanding in every game. These published averages show the difference. All three are plugged-in results at 2560 x 1440, below the screen's native 2560 x 1600 resolution.

Dota 2 averaged about 182 fps at 1080p High in the same test. That gives a better use for the 240Hz screen: fast-paced, less demanding games. In the heavier titles above, the graphics workload limits frame rates well before the display does.

The GPU has 8GB of dedicated graphics memory for textures and other game data. That is separate from the 32GB of system RAM. If your priority is more demanding graphics settings, compare the RTX 5070 Ti alternative below before paying for a RAM upgrade that will not change those 8GB.

Battery life: how long can you play unplugged?

Expect an estimated 1–2 hours of demanding gaming on battery, with lower performance than when plugged in.

Unplugging the Crosshair 18 cut its graphics benchmark score by roughly one-third. The game results above are with the charger connected.

What about work, browsing and classes?

The Crosshair 18 reached 10 hours 54 minutes in a Wi-Fi browsing test with integrated graphics. Light use is a much better fit for its battery than gaming. Keeping the RTX 5070 inactive for those tasks is important; video calls and editing are heavier workloads than that browsing test.

Can you leave the gaming charger at home?

USB-C charging supports 100W while the laptop is running, useful for lighter tasks with a compatible charger. Full gaming performance needs the supplied 240W adapter. A small USB-C charger reduces what you carry for work; it does not replace the gaming adapter's power.

Will it fit your everyday routine?

Will the size make your setup better?

The 18-inch screen earns its space when you want to enjoy games without immediately buying a monitor. The taller 16:10 shape is also useful for documents and editing timelines. If you already have an external monitor, the extra built-in screen area matters less; a smaller laptop may fit your routine better.

This is an IPS screen. For someone who cares more about deep blacks in dark scenes than maximum screen area, the smaller OLED Lenovo below offers a different trade-off.

What goes into your bag?

The laptop weighs 6.83 lb before the charger and is about 15.9 inches wide. Check your bag's internal dimensions, rather than assuming a compartment labeled “laptop” will fit it. Moving it to a friend's house is one thing; carrying it across campus every day is another.

Will the fans get annoying?

Performance mode is louder than Balanced during gaming, so the mode you choose matters. Balanced reduces noise with a performance trade-off. For a shared room, consider whether you are happy using a headset and whether the person beside you will tolerate the fans.

What else will you need to buy?

Three USB-A ports let you plug in a mouse, headset dongle and another accessory without starting with a hub. Ethernet, HDMI and Thunderbolt 4 cover a wired desk and external-display options. The 720p webcam has a privacy shutter; for frequent meetings or streaming, a better external camera is a sensible extra.

Which configuration is worth paying for?

Will you notice the Core Ultra 9 and 32GB RAM?

The processor is useful when this is also your machine for heavier work such as video exports or compiling code. The 32GB RAM gives games and background apps room to coexist. For someone mainly buying to play, though, the graphics card and screen are more useful comparison points than the premium processor name.

The 1TB SSD fits roughly 7–8 large 100GB games, with room left for Windows, apps and updates. For scale, Cyberpunk 2077 lists 70GB of required space and Black Myth: Wukong 130GB. A library of 130GB games brings capacity closer to six. The second M.2 slot lets you add another SSD later.

What does “AI” do for you?

MSI AI Engine detects gaming, work and video playback and automatically adjusts hardware settings for the task, saving you from switching performance profiles manually. Separately, NVIDIA DLSS uses AI upscaling and frame generation to raise frame rates in supported games.

Our verdict: a big-screen buy at the right price

The Crosshair 18 HX AI makes most sense as your main gaming and work computer, with occasional travel. You get an expansive 18-inch screen, good 1440p gaming with DLSS, and a Core Ultra 9 plus 32GB RAM for heavier work. The RTX 5070’s 8GB of graphics memory is the weak point: demanding games still need settings compromises.

Expect a 6.83 lb laptop, clearly audible fans and the 240W charger for full gaming performance. Estimated gaming runtime is around 1–2 hours unplugged; the 10-hour 54-minute browsing result shows it is a much better fit for light work away from an outlet.

For gaming, we would favor a comparable 12GB RTX 5070 Ti model when the price gap is small. Choose the Crosshair for its 18-inch screen and a meaningfully lower price.
